LE CABINET DU ROY DE FRANCE, dans lequel il y a trois perles precieuses d'inestimable valeur: par le moyen desquelles sa Maieste s'en va le premier monarque du monde, & ses suiets du tout soulagez.
No place or printer 1581 - FIRST EDITION 1581, French text, small 8vo, approximately 160 x 95 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, pages: [16], 647, [13], collation: 8, a-z8, A-S8, T (T2 blank), rebound in red morocco with 5 gilt raised bands, richly gilt in 4 compartments, 2 earlier gilt lettered tan leather labels, bright decorative gilt dentelles (turn ins), original red morocco sides laid down, triple gilt ruled borders to covers, all edges gilt, earlier marbling to edges slightly showing through, original marbled endpapers. Manuscript notes in French on blank inserted before title page, light browning to Preface pages, intermittent light browning or light staining, mostly to margins, some upper margins trimmed, tiny piece missing from top corner of pages 49, 59, and 481, another missing from lower corner of page 265 (paper flaw), very small hole in fore-edge margin of page 294. A very good copy. The work is a virulent satirical attack on the Catholic church and the clergy, the nobility, the government and politics and the management of the finances of France. The three "perles" are the Word of God, the Aristocracy, and the Third Estate. Adams B 219; Kress Library 143. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. POSTAGE AT COST.
