An Area of Darkness: An Experience of India
London: Andre Deutsch, 1964. First Edition of the author's first book in his Indian Trilogy which includes: "An Area of Darkness", "India: A Wounded Civilization", "India: A Million Mutinies Now". Octavo, original boards. Signed by the author. Fine in very good dust jacket. Trinidadian essayist and novelist V.S. Naipaul has won both the 1971 Booker Prize and the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature. An Area of Darkness is a travelogue detailing Naipaul's trip through India in the early sixties. "The world Naipaul sees is of course no void at all: it is a world dense with physical and social phenomena, brutally alive with the complications and contradictions of actual human endeavour... This world of Naipaul's is in fact charged with what can only be described as a romantic view of reality, an almost unbearable tension between the idea and the physical fact..." (The New York Review of Books).
