Crazy in Berlin -- inscribed to fellow author James Jones
New York: Charles Scribner's, 1958. First edition. Hardcover. Good/Good. Inscribed on the fly leaf by Berger to fellow author James 'Jim' Jones and his wife Gloria, 'To my friends, Gloria & Jim Jones with admiration and affection' and is dated Paris 13, Oct 65. There is a second, longer note by Berger on the half-title, that reads 'Twenty-nine years ago, the first time I touched this copy of Crazy in Berlin, I was a guest in James Jones's home in Paris, drinking 50-year-old armagnac and smoking a Montecristo Numero Tres, the legendary pre-Castro cigar, both provided by my generous host' signed by him, and dated Grand View-on-Hudson, 13 August 1994. Good copy in a Good, first state dust jacket. 1958, First Edition. Hardcover. Light foxing to endpapers; early fraying to cloth along the edges, and at spine ends; binding does not appear to be cracked, but certainly has some play to it. The DJ rubbed; shallow chipping to spine ends and corners; spine sunned slightly; other light handling and soil; two short closed snags under 1-inch; original price present. Berger's first book, and a fantastic association copy, connecting two of the premier hard-boiled fictioneers of the mid 20th-century.
