The World a Department Store: A Story of Life Under a Coƶperative System [Inscribed Copy]
Lewiston, ME: By the Author, 1900. First edition. Hardcover. A thoroughly eccentric work, inscribed to style. Like Bellamy's Looking Backward, Peck's is a fully-realized political utopia, envisioned and described in obsessive and sometimes painful detail. The descriptions are accompanied by scale drawings and plans, some folding. Peck seems to have had every hope that his book, like Bellamy's, would stir mass political action; but a generation of "Peckites" never appeared, and the novel has been lost to the ages. The inscription, dated some thirty years after publication, suggests that Peck was still distributing his book and advocating for a commercial utopian revolution well into the 20th century. Peck died in 1935. NEGLEY 899. SARGENT p.63. Octavo; decorated gray cloth; dustjacket; 310pp; folding frontispiece & 15 plates. Illustrations by Harry C. Wilkinson. A tight, unworn copy, Near Fine, lacking the scarce dustwrapper. Lengthily inscribed by Peck on front endpaper: "My offering to my associate masters and workers in our State Chamber of Commerce this work published in 1900 reflecting a 'World Moving Picture' issuing directly to ourselves non-transferable [?] of our National Credit Currency from the Treasury Department of our Community National Sub-Treasury Building is the World remedy for all our Commercial diseases - The discoverer - Bradford Peck," dated Sept 28, 1932.
