Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1886. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.141; [1], blank. Bound without the advertisement in half dark blue calf with raised bands, marbled sides, edges and endpapers and red title label to spine. One or two tiny marks within; externally a little rubbed. Very good indeed. The classic mystery crime novel/ horror story (or Crawler as Stevenson called it), inspired by the case of the Edinburgh body snatchers Burke and Hare, was written in just three days, although it was shelved by the author for three years as he considered it too disturbing for publication. Jekyll and Hyde is a chilling masterpiece work; a brilliantly suggestive, resonant study of human duality by a natural storyteller.
