Medicina ex pulsu, sive systema doctrine sphygmicae
Rudolph Graeffer, Vienna 1770 - 8vo. xxxvi, [4], 268, [22] pp. + folding plate. Uncut and largely unopened copy in original "temporary" Austrian boards covered with decorative paper, some light chipping to spine and hinges, first twelve leaves with faded water-stain along lower corners. Preserved in a black cloth folding case. An extraordinary medical book artifact: this volume survives in completely original condition, unopened, and preserved in the original "temporary" boards; medical books of this early date almost never survive in "as issued" state. First edition of this thorough treatise on the pulse, in which the doctrines of Bordeu and Fouquet in particular are addressed. Wetsch (1737-1779), an Austrian by birth, was greatly interested in "organic pulses," i.e. the affections of each organ to produce a different kind of pulse, by which they may be recognized. In 1730 Solano de Luque, a Spanish physician, published a novel treatise on the subject, the "Lapis Lydius Apollinis." The work was hailed by Michel, Bordeau, and Fouquet, who continued Solano's work and made important contributions. Wetsch embraced these improvements, and even went to Paris to learn from the authors themselves. There Wetsch studied medicine and focused especially on physiology and pathology. Six years after the present work was published, he was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Moscow. Literature: Waller 10258. Hirsch V, 915. Lesky 709. Blake 487 (Prague edition, published in the same year). See the long contemporary review of the "Medicina ex pulsu" in Allgemeine deutsche Bibliothek (1770), Vol. 14, 1. Stuck, pp. 355-358. PROVENANCE: Bookplate inside upper cover of M.R. Heynsius van den Berg (1882-1969), medical doctor and director of the Consultatie Bureau van de Amsterdamse Vereniging tot Bestrijding van Tuberculose. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
