HISTORY OF QUADRUPEDS THIRD EDITION (TWO VOLUMES, COMPLETE)
B. & J. White, London, England 1793 - Two Quartos, Approximately 10" x 8". Quarterbound in original speckled calf, recently rebacked, with new speckled calf (leather) spine, gilt-stamped, with five raised bands (six compartments), gilt-ruled, and gilt-lettered contrasting spine labels of dark maroon. Red silk ribbon markers, sewn-in. Front board of Volume I somewhat bowed. Hinges reinforced with Japanese paper. blank,[xxx],306, blank, BEAUTIFUL engravings, most by Irish painter and engraver Peter Mazell. The Preface is followed by Pennant's own phylogenetic method, dividing Quadrupeds into the Hoofed, the Digitated, the Pinnated, and the Winged. This is followed by a systematic index, a list of Mr. Pennant's works, and this by a Catalogue of Plates. Volume II continues, through the Quadruped "universe", then concludes as well with an index, followed by an "Index of the Names of Quadrupeds, in the Ancient Classic Writers, in the Works of M. De Buffon, and in Other Authors". A lovely set. In the preface, author Thomas Pennant explains that the work was "originally intended for private amusement", as as a sort of index to "any particular animal in the voluminous history of quadrupeds by the late Comte De Buffon". But because the work "swelled by degrees to a size beyond [his] first expectation,he was determined to bring it into its present form, and to usher into the world." Also in the preface, Pennant brings the reader up to date, by citing and commenting upon studies of the four-footed kingdom undertaken by his predecessors, amongst whom are Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon; John Ray; Jacob Theodore Klein; Mathurin Jacques Brisson; & Carl Linnaeus. Of Linnaeus, Pennant writes: "I reject his first division, which he calls PRIMATES, or Chiefs of the Creation; because my vanity will not suffer me to rank mankind with Apes, Monkies, Maucaucos, and Bats, the companions Linnaeus has allotted us even in his last system."The Preface is followed by Pennant's own method, dividing Quadrupeds into the Hoofed, the Digitated, the Pinnated, and the Winged. This is followed by a systematic index, then a list of Mr. Pennant's works, and this by a Catalogue of Plates. Volume II continues, through the Quadruped "universe", then concludes as well with an index, followed by an "Index of the Names of Quadrupeds, in the Ancient Classic Writers, in the Works of M. De Buffon, and in Other Authors" [Attributes: Hard Cover]
