The Brown Owl. A Fairy Story. With two illustrations by F.Madox Brown, the author's grandfather.
T.Fisher Unwin, London 1892 [i.e. 1891].(1892). The first edition of the author's first book, issued as the primary volume in 'The Children's Library' series. Small 8vo. 165pp. Original publishers patterned cloth, with similarly decorated endpapers and edges. Binding cocked and a little shaken. Hinges tender, and extremities and corner tips a little rubbed and chafed. The frontispiece lacks the tissue protector, and the second plate is detached and laid-in (although the tissue here is present). A tender but about good copy of an uncommon book, written by the author to amuse his sister Juliet, for which he was paid the princely sum of ten pounds (there is speculation that Ford's grandfather pressured Edward Garnett into ensuring the book was published). A possibly spurious pencilled note to the half-title reads 'The family copy'. Harvey A1.. Book Condition: Fair. Binding: Hardcover
