Order Document: Order of the Temple of the Living Fire ] The Degree of Silence.
Privately printed ND [ Circa 1936 ], Vancouver, BC Canada - Softcover. Landscape quarto. (ii) 1 - 23 (24) (1)- 21 (ii)pp. Plain blue wrappers with red seal "Order of the Temple of the Living Fire" on upper cover, 305mm x 230mm [ 12 in x 9 in ]. Private order document from the estate of Rubina Stansfeld Jones, wife of Charles Stansfeld Jones [ Frater Achad ], with her ownership signature on lower edge of first (blank) leaf. Little is known about "The Temple of the Living Fire" other than what has been recorded by Reuben Swinburne Clymer (1878-1966). According to Clymer he met one Henry James Barton (1868–1943) a man who he described as having "a deep and profound knowledge and understanding of the Occult Sciences" in about the year 1897. Barton was also the editor and publisher of a respected Occult magazine, "The Philomathian." A few years later Barton, founded an occult fraternity, the "Philosophers of the Living Fire" whose teachings Clymer described as "sound and true Occult teachings of White Magic." Barton took for himself the grandiloquent title Reverend Supreme Grand Rabboni, while Clymer consented to the use of his name, and accepted the title of Grand Rabboni, though he later claimed to have had no active part in the group. In 1905 a fraud order was issued against the group, supposedly at the behest of Barton's wife, with whom he had an acromonious parting after she and an affair with the printer of "The Philomathian." According to Clymer Barton attempted to reorganise the group in 1917, and was again accused of fraud (the argument apparently being that occult lessons that he was selling via the mail had no measurable worth, and hence in doing so he was defrauding people). Whether or not it was to do with the original fraud accusations, Barton is known to have been using the name "The Temple of the Living Fire" (rather than "The Philosophers") from 1914, if not earlier. From this point the group vanishes from the records, although it apparently metamorphised into the "Order of the Temple of the Living Fire" which was active in the 1930s, and from which time the present volume would seem to date. Anecdotal, but reliable evidence suggests that Charles Stansfeld Jones was associated with the group in the mid-1930s, but little else is known of it.The volume clearly covers the preliminary grades of the Order, and its contents deal broadly with subjects such as kabbalah, invocation, exorcism, astral work, initiation, health and attainment. The work has no publication details or title-page (clearly it was issued for private distribution only within the Order). The first page is headed "The Degree of Silence / The Mystery of the Golden Calf"; the third page is headed "Hebrew Mystical Alphabet" above a chart of Hebrew correspondences, and pp. 3 - 8 are basically devoted to different aspects of the Kabbalah, with a short piece on the "Practical Use of Sulphur" at the bottom of p. 8. The ninth page is headed "Table Number Two" beneath which is the subheading "The Secret Laws Which Moses Received for the / Physical and Spiritual Training of the Priests" below which are eight paragraphs of text. Over the next five pages (pp. 9 -14) each of the following sub-headings appears, followed by varying lengths of text: Invocation; Exorcism; How to Prepare a Sanctum Sanctorum; By the Rev. Supreme Grand Rabboni; Cosmic Vibration; Intuition; How to Develop the Astral Body or Soul Power; Exercises for the First Week; Exercises for the Second Week; Exercises for the Third Week; Exercises for the Fourth Week; Method for Producing Trance Sleep; Sources of Occult Wisdom; Special Advice to the Initiate. The fifteenth page is headed "Table Number Three" beneath which is the subheading "The Mystery of Creation and Concentration / Given By Moses to his Brethren Aaron and Joshua / On top of the Mount" followed by 20 lines of text. Then the following subchapters: Amplification by the Rev. Supreme Grand Rabboni; Of Temperance, Of Fortitude; Of Prudence; Of Justice; Exercises to Overcome Fear, Anger, Worry and Do [Attributes: Soft Cover]
