Thomas Wharton
, May 5, 1778. May 5, 1778. A document signed "Thos. Wharton, Pres" as the President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. The document ordered David Rittenhouse, a noted patriot, to pay "Caleb Davis... [for] Riding from Lancaster to General Potters Camp in Haverford from thence to the neighborhood of Darby and Chester as per order of the Supreme Executive Council for the purpose of informing them the situation of the camp and the disposition of the people in that neighborhood... " David Rittenhouse was on of the foremost scientists and mathematicians in colonial America. During the Revolution, he served as Pennsylvania's treasurer. The document contains some toning on the folds and is professionally silked for reinforcement purposes. The document is in very good condition with a large, dark signature.
