Holograph Receipt for "Seven Fat Cattle" for the use of the Army at Chatham, New Jersey, 1777
- Small holograph document. 8" x 3". Old folds, old paper repair in upper right corner affecting two letters, else very good. In full: "Recd. of Mr. Wessels Tucker Seven Fat Cattle for the use of the army at this place Chatham. Mar. 29th, 17777. E[d]w[ard]. Howell." Docketed with the amount on the verso. Wessels Tucker (b. 1741) was a carpenter. At this time, Washington was in winter quarters at Morristown, when Howell bought the cattle in the adjacent town of Chatham.
