1658 Famiano Strada Rhetoric Jesuit Mission Classical Latin Eloquentia Bipartia
Amstelaedami : Sumptibus Joannis Ravesteynii, MDCLVIII [1658]. - 1658 Famiano Strada Rhetoric Jesuit Mission Classical Latin Eloquentia Bipartia “The most significant influence on the history of rhetoric!” In the 17th-century, the Jesuit mission was to teach and convert protestants to Catholicism through Jesuitism. This method of education became much more prominent, however, than just spiritual conversion. Jesuit colleges and universities were expanding all over Europe where students were trained in eloquence for rhetoric which was primarily based on Cicero and other important classical rhetoricians. Because of the quickly expanding student population, textbooks on rhetoric were in high demand. Famiano Strada, a Jesuit professor of rhetoric, is chiefly remembered for his famous account of the Dutch War. He composed ‘Eloquentia Bipartia’ to help teach rhetoric to Jesuits; however, he incorporated references to his ‘De Bello Belgico’ in the second part of this lesser-known book. According to Conley, ‘Eloquentia Bipartia’ is “the most significant influence on the history of rhetoric in the 17th-century that was exercised by the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits.” Item number: #2622 Price: $499 STRADA, Famiano R.P.
