The Fables of La Fontaine [DORE ILLUSTRATIONS]
London and New York: Cassell, Petter, and Galpin, 1870. Hardcover. Very good. Dore, Gustave. Folio size, 839 pp., illustrated. Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695), one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century, is best remembered for his "Fables"; he was highly regarded in his own lifetime and remains so today. The English version of his fables with illustrations by the renowned French artist Gustave Dore (1832-1883) were eagerly awaited. In April of 1867 the French parts edition (of which the first of the 58 parts was published in November 1866), was reviewed and a month later Cassell announced a 30-month La Fontaine parts edition. It ended up being only 22 issues, likely to finish at the same time as the British version. The Cassell edition includes 4 of the 8 engravings that are only in the French parts edition, 5 of the 8 engravings that are only in the 1868 French book edition, and 10 of the 15 engravings that are only in the 1867 French book edition, excluding 14 engravings from all three French editions. It is one of Dore's most collected works, with engravings, like the tales, that are both ethereal and gruesome.___DESCRIPTION: Contemporary half red morocco and pebbled red cloth covered boards, backstrip lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, title-page in red and black, 329 engravings, including 86 full-page plates; folio size (12.5" by 9.5"), [i-iv] v-lxiv 1-839 pp., early English edition, circa 1870s.___CONDITION: A very good copy, internally clean and complete, no prior owner markings, minimal foxing, text block is straight and square, gilt is still bright; the covers suffer from some damp staining and significant rubbing and chipping, overall this copy is still in very good condition and will be a delight to any lover of either fables or Dore's artistry.___CITATION: Gustave Dore Adrift on Dreams of Splendor, by Dan Malan, pp. 93-95, 283.___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and heavy book, and therefore additional postage will apply.
