London: R. Brimley,, 1901. With designs by R. E. Fry. Quarto. Original cloth-backed boards, spine lettered in grey, front board lettered in white. With 11 vignette title pages. Spine toned, extending onto covers, wear to extremities, a little loss to base of spine, foxing to text block. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Association copy, inscribed by the author's younger brother, "A. W. Verrall from G. M. Trevelyan", on the front free endpaper. George Macaulay Trevelyan was one of the best-known historians of the 20th century, remembered primarily as one of the final champions of Whig history and as Regius Professor of History at Cambridge from 1927 to 1943. Arthur Woollgar Verrall was a classics scholar at Trinity College, Cambridge from 1877 to 1911, where George Macaulay Trevelyan was also a Fellow between 1898 and 1903.
