Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis)
Handpresse Gutsch, Berlin 1988 - Number 51 of 115 regular edition (total edition 125), folio size, [68] pp., signed by Herbert Gutsch, in German. Franz Kafka (1883-1924) was a German speaking Ashkenazi Jewish novelist and short story writer; this work, Die Verwandlung, published in 1915, being the most well known of his works. It has one of the most famous opening lines in western literature: "As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect." With lovely woodcuts on every page by Herbert Gutsch, a well known German graphic artist, printer and art publisher who has yet to be discovered by many collectors in the U.S. The three-color woodcut by Gutsch, running over 55 pages of text, begins as a narrow horizontal line, which initially separates the type area and becomes progressively wider, in order to completely replace the text by the end. The figures appearing in this frieze gain more and more dominance and menace as the narrative progresses.___DESCRIPTION: Original white cloth with lettering in black to both boards and illustration from the text repeated to all sides, woodcut pictorial endpapers in black and white, three-color woodcut spans all 55 pages of text, note that all text is in German; type Cicero Sabon Antiqua, Werkdruck paper, folio size (15 1/8" by 11 1/8"), unpaginated with [68] pp., limited edition, this number 51 of the 115 regular edition, from a total edition of 125, signed by the artist; housed in a blue cloth slipcase.___CONDITION: Overall fine, the binding is clean and totally without wear, the text block is strong with solid hinges, the interior pages are clean and crisp, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some light foxing to the final few pages of text due to offsetting from the inks used in the woodcut, else fine; in a like slipcase with a few minor stray marks.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA,ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
