The Punishments of China,
1808 - 22 handcoloured, engraved plates, each with explanations of the punishments in English and French on the facing page. Folio. Contemporary straight-grain dark blue morocco (minor rubbing and wear), some staining and crinkling to the last few pages, overall still a very good copy. [v]pp. London, W. Miller, ?Evidently a copy of a series of Chinese water-colours. The view expressed in the preface that legal torture was an instrument of tyranny, an attitude perhaps indicative of pressures in Britain for legal reform.? (Lust). Cordier, Sinica 549; c.f. Abbey 532 (1804 ed.); Lipperheide 1522 (1808 ed.); Lust 712 (1808 ed.).
