London.: The Fleuron Limited.. 1929.. Black and white full page woodcuts, 78pp, 11 3/8 x 8 inches, cloth covered boards (hardbound). Original decorative dustjacket, a bit worn with some modest paper loss. The volume itself is in very good to fine condition, with only the very slightest sunning to the tips of the spine. Contents clean and bright. This is volume III of the Edition de Luxe: with limitation statement "Of this Special Edition The Woodcut: An Annual there have been printed on hand-made paper eighty copies, of which seventy-five are for sale. This is No. 22." The volume was printed at the Curwen Press, Plaistow London. A signed wood-engraving by John Nash entitled "The Two Tugs" is featured as the frontispiece. Contents include an appreciation of Nash’s wood engravings by W. A. Thorpe. Other studies include Wood and Metal in the Invention of Printing by Victor Scholderer; German Woodcut Lettering by Julius Rodenberg; A Glossary of Common Terms Used in Xylograpy. There is an illustrated feature entitled Fourteen Contemporary Woodcuts with full page plates of the work of Gwendolen Raverat, Grace Rogers, Tirzah Garwood, Eric Jones, Gertrude Hermes, W. Morgan, Hans Andre, Vladimir Favorski, Andrej Gontcharoff, Yefmin Minin, Nicholas Brummer, Franz M. Jansen, Aristide Maillol and J. Franken. The front end paper in the lower right corner is inscribed in pencil "H.F. Wentz." Wentz was an artist and educator instrumental in promoting the Oregon (USA) regionalist movement in the early decades of the twentieth century. .
