Contemporary sheep, flat spine divided by gilt filets, red morocco lettering piece. Complete copy of Paine's collected works, here in a lovely contemporary American binding. The second edition of the first American collection of his writings, preceded by an edition of the same year in seven sections. The nine sections in this edition include Rights of Man, Common Sense, The Crisis, Public Good, and five letters, each with separate pagination and title pages. This lovely copy with provenance to John Lyon Gardiner of Gardiner's Island, New York - an island at the eastern end of Long Island which is the only piece of American real estate still intact in the same form as its original English royal grant originally issued in 1639. During the Revolution, Gardiner sided with the American cause and is famous for feigning grave sickness during the War of 1812 to ward off potential British occupiers.
