Ariel Books; Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1962. First edition. Very Good +/Very Good. An attractive copy of the book with a previous owner's bookplate on the front paste-down, otherwise clean and unmarked. A few spots of toning on the spine, corresponding with chips in the dust jacket. Dust jacket Very Good, showing the original price of $3.25, but with the Newbery Medal, making it second issue. Two small tape ghosts on the jacket verso. & & The author's best-loved work and one that is notoriously uncommon in the first edition. Originally rejected by 26 publishers, before John C. Farrar took a chance on the publication, perhaps explaining the relative scarcity of copies. One of the book's early reviewers wrote: "I couldn't get it out of my mind - it has a curious magic, it casts a spell over one." The truth of which is evident from the generations of readers who have been struck by the power of this unusual work of science fiction. Very Good + in Very Good. dust jacket.
