New-Town. (Ile Van Diemen)
Paris,: J. Tastu (ed.), 1833.. Aquatint view, handcoloured, 260 x 390 mm, proof impression on China paper laid down; in fine condition. A lovely example of one of the best early views of Van Diemens Land, showing the fledgling settlement at New Town, two-and-a-half miles north-west of Hobart. The Dumont-Durville voyage was approved in late 1825 with a mission of visiting Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea and many islands of the Pacific. He anchored off Hobart in December 1827, becoming the first French warship to arrive at the town since its foundation. It was during his 6 weeks in Van Diemens Land that Dumont-Durville first heard the account of Peter Dillon regarding the fate of La PÈrouse; as a result, Dumont-Durville sailed to Vanikoro where he salvaged a few items from the wrecks.
