The Lord of the Rings
George Allen and Unwin - This is a complete three-volume set of first UK editions (2 are later printings) of J. R. R. Tolkien's classic trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, published by George Allen and Unwin. None have the dust jackets, and each cover has a notably cocked spine and some scuffs, but all are securely connected, with no loose front or back covers. The spines have moderate end wear, and slightly faded but clearly legible gilt lettering (see photos). The first volume, The Fellowship of the Ring (423 pages) is a 4th printing, November, 1955. There is a personal bookplate to the front end page, but no other attachments. The only other writing is a brief two-line note on the last (blank) page. There are no tears, and few creases, most to the bottom edge of a group of pages toward the front of the book. There are light stains to the page edges, and occasional spot stains to the page faces, but most page faces are clean, with no stains or scuffs. The binding is secure, with no loose or missing pages. The map at the back is in very good condition, with minor sunning to a few creases, but otherwise clean, with no notable stains, no tears or fade, and with a tight attachment to the book. The second volume, The Two Towers (352 pages), is a 1955 second impression. It also has a pronounced slant to the spine, and a few scuffs, but no notable stains. There is no bookplate, but the name of the same owner is written to the top of the front end page. There are no stamps, and no other writing. The pages are clean and without tears. There are some shallow creases. The binding is secure, with no loose pages. The map at the back is near fine to fine, with no flaws of note. The third volume, The Return of the King (416 pages) is a first impression printing, from 1953. This spine is also slanted, and with a notable stain. There are stains to the back cover. The connection to the inside is, as with the others, secure. The same name is written to the front end page. This is the only writing. There are no stamps. There are a few stains to the page edges, but the page faces are clean, with all text unfaded. There are no tears, but, as with the others, there are some creases. The binding is secure, with no loose or missing pages. The map is near fine to fine, with no flaws of note. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
