The Red Badge of Courage
New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. Beige buckram with red and black lettering and decorative gilt around the letter "T" on the front cover. Clay-coated endpapers. Last few signatures are loose, but holding. The boards are edge-worn and soiled. Small amount of cloth loss at the tail of the spine, affecting the publisher's name. Book shop label at top of front pastedown. Previous owner name neatly scripted at top of blank page preceding the title page. 233 pages plus publisher's ads. This copy shows the year 1895 on both the title page and copyright page. Not a true first printing because of the following points of issue: Points of Issue: In the ads at the back of the book for the publisher's other titles, The Red Badge of Courage is listed as the first entry, thus not a first issue of the first printing in 1895. The first issue of the 1895 printing also featured an unbroken last line on page 225. On that page for this second issue, the word congratulated line breaks after the letter "u." Still a very scarce 1895 printing, a slight variation in the first print run. . First Edition, Second Issue. Hard Cover. Fair/No Jacket.
