Small quarto (6 15/16 x 5 3/8 inches; 177 x 137 mm.). 51, [1] pp. Color frontispiece and nine full-page color illustrations. Black and white vignette on the title-page and nineteen black and white vignettes in the text.Original greenish-tan boards decoratively stamped and lettered in darker green on front cover and lettered in darker green on spine. Color pictorial label on front cover within a blind rectangular panel with a scalloped bottom edge. Color pictorial endpapers (Quinby Plates VIII and IX). Previous owner’s ink presentation inscription on the half-title. A near fine copy. In an original slightly later (ca. 1911) glazed paper glassine dust jacket printed in black with “Cash Price in Great Brain One Shilling Net” at the lower edge of the front panel, with an advertisement for “The Peter Rabbit Books” on the rear panel listing The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes (which was published in 1911) and The Tale of Mr. Tod (which was published in 1912), an advertisement for “A Selective List of Pictures Books for Children” on the front flap, and an advertisement for “Unique Picture books for Children. All illustrated by L. Leslie Brooke” on the rear flap. Jacket with a closed tear (1 1/2 inch at top) to front panel and another closed tear to back panel, not affecting text.Linder, p. 428.
