The Broken Spoke (SIGNED)
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1976. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/near fine. Gorey, Edward. Oblong 24mo - over 5" to 5.75", 64 pp. (unpaginated), signed by author and illustrator Edward Gorey. Edward Gorey (1925-2000), whose distinctive style is evocative of a mystical, gothic Victorian era, is well known both for his "Masterpiece Theatre" illustrated opening sequence as well as for his poisonously funny miniature picture books which are complex, humorous, serious, and provocative. His vast body of work includes over 100 books written by himself, as well as having illustrated works by many well-known authors such as T. S. Eliot, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, H. G. Wells, and Virginia Woolf (N. B. info from the Edward Gorey House website). This work "combines, with breath-taking cleverness, two objects of consuming interest: postcards and bicycles" (from dust jacket flap).***DESCRIPTION: Wrap-around pictorial paper boards with a colour illustration by Gorey, illustrated endpapers (with "postcard" illustrations with the words "Cycling Cards from the pen of Dogear Wryde" (a pseudonym and anagram of Edward Gorey)), Edward Gorey's signature on the title page above his name crossed out (per usual), a different "postcard" on the recto of each page (16 of which first appeared in Sports Illustrated, June 1976) in both colour and black and white, some of the cards have corresponding text on the verso of the prior page; oblong book (approximately 5" tall by 7.25" wide), unpaginated with 32 leaves. The wrap-around dust jacket mirrors the design of the book, with original price of $6.95 on the front flap. Laid in is a Gotham Book Mart bookmark, light blue with dark blue cat illustration by Gorey.***CONDITION: Volume and dust jacket are both near fine, the volume's illustrations on the boards are bright, the text block is strong and square, the hinges solid, internally it has brilliant and vivid illustrations, and all pages are clean and free from any markings; there is very minor wear to corners, and the first few pages have some residue at the top edge from the glue used on the front pastedown endpaper. The dust jacket is not price-clipped, it is clean and the spine has only the faintest of sunning; there is some light wear to the corners, head and tail of the spine, and the top edge of the front flap has a faint line of discoloration from the glue residue. The bookmark has some sunning and wear near the top.***CITATION: Toledo A63C.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
