Missive ofte placcaet van den Coninck van Spangien ghesonden aenden Hartoch van Lerma, aengaende het bannen ende verjaghen van de Moriscos, dat zijn de oude Landtsaten vant Coninckrijk van Valencien in Spangien
A rare translation by Linschoten, referring to the expulsion of Moors from Spain by using whatever means necessary. 1609. Meyn. Enkhuizen, J. Lenaertsz. In 4to (190 mm x 142 mm). 6 pp. Modern boards. A very good copy, only scattered foxing. Van Linschoten's translation of King Philip III of Spain's proclamation ordering the Duke of Lerma to expel the Moors from Spain, a decision that would ultimately contribute to the decline of Spain's power, and of considerable importance to the Dutch, as the 12 Year's Truce turned their military contest with Spain into an economic one. It opens with the opinion of religious advisors and explaining the Moors alleged dealings with the enemies of the crown. The imprint continues with the King?s order itself, which gives the Duque de Lerma and his officers free reign to carry out the expulsion by whatever means they see fit, to confiscate lands and goods, and to set an example for all sympathetic to the Moors. The Moriscos were Spanish Moors who had converted to Christianity, but were never assimilated into the Spanish communities. Tiele, Pamfletten, 790.
