Hartford: American Publishing Co. VG book. NEAR FINE text leaves. 8vo, 631,(1ad)pp. BAL 3386.. 1880. 1st edition. Hardcover.. VG book. Cloth. 1st state text block @ 5/8" thick. Both frontis 2nd state. Cover gilt faded, extrems with minor wear. . Binding cracked @ first signature, between cp & next leaf. Otherwise tight. Text block edges clean, no hint of soiling, even on top edge. Neatly inked owner's name dated 1882. Text possibly faintly aged but ZERO foxing, soiling, marginalia, etc. Cover extrems with very minor wear. Cover gilt darkened but still clear. The number "0" deeply embossed below publisher logo on lower board. The "0" identified, to the publisher, the subscription agent who sold the book. This info found in "FIRSTS" magazine vol 8, # 7/8. This issue devotes 30 pages to Twain's primary works. Except for Huck who gets 6 pages all to himself in issue 9. "FIRSTS" also states "... it should be recalled that Twain mentions in one of his letters that this book was produced in three different pressrooms. The use of multiple plates reduces the usefulness of the [frontipiece] states in determining possible printing." These two "FIRSTS" issues are musts for the Twain collector. .
