Leipzig: Literis et Sumtibus Goeschenii. Good with no dust jacket. 1805. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. lii, 1-341; 342-703 pp (continuous pagination between the 2 vols). In what appears to be original 3/4 leather with brown marbled boards, red edges. Cracking at all joints, corners and spine tips rubbed, boards threatening but still holding, leather spine coverings crackling and chipped, labels gone. Interior front covers have bookplate of James Alexander Henryson-Caird (1847-1921), whose library was auctioned at Sotheby's in 1922, as well as his signature "J Henryson" on each title page (before he styled himself a hyphenate). Some browning at the top and bottom edges near the front and back due to reaction to the leather, otherwise clean and unmarked. Text in Latin with much Greek. Sturz's look at the life and writings of Empedocles, c. 490 – c. 430 BC) "a Greek pre-Socratic philosopher and a citizen of Acragas (Agrigentum), a Greek city in Sicily. Empedocles' philosophy is best known for originating the cosmogenic theory of the four classical elements - earth, wind, water, fire. He also proposed forces he called Love and Strife which would mix as well as separate the elements. These physical speculations were part of a history of the universe which also dealt with the origin and development of life.His brilliant oratory, his penetrating knowledge of nature, and the reputation of his marvellous powers, including the curing of diseases, and averting epidemics, produced many myths and stories surrounding his name.
