A Monograph of the Bucerotidae, or Family of the Hornbills
[New York:] published for subscribers by the author [printed by Taylor and Francis], [1877]-1882. Large 4to., (14 4/8 x 11 inches). 60 EXCEPTIONALLY FINE lithographic plates, comprising 57 hand-coloured plates by and after J. G. Keulemans, and 3 uncoloured plates of generic characters by and after J. Smit, all printed by M. and N. Hanhart. Contemporary half green morocco, green cloth, gilt (spine lightly faded to brown). THE LAST OF ELLIOT'S GREAT ORNITHOLOGICAL MONOGRAPHS First edition, originally issued in ten parts, and a "a comprehensive treatment of the entire family of hornbills" (Zimmer). A genus of ground and tree-dwelling birds, somewhere between the Kingfishers and the Hoopoes, inhabiting the Ethiopian, Oriental and Australian regions, Hornbills are renowned for their formidable bill, which is deceptively hollow and permeated with a network of boney fibers, and their long and strong eyelashes. Plate 44 although included on the plate list was never issued. Daniel Giraud Elliot was born in New York, but later moved to Chicago to serve as Curator of Zoology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. His great wealth and interest in ornithology enabled the production of a series of sumptuous color-plate books on birds, long after most publishers had turned to smaller formats and cheaper coloring techniques. Elliot commissioned the best bird artists of the day including Joseph Wolf , Josef Smit, and in the case of the Hornbills, the celebrated Keulemans. Fine Bird Books p. 74; Nissen IVB 297; Zimmer p. 207.
