Thomas Bensley, London 1800 - 6 Volume Macklin [Bible in English.] The Holy Bible. London: Printed for Thomas Macklin by Thomas Bensley, 1800. Six very large folio volumes, each approximately 19 x 16 inches; the full set weighs about 150 pounds. Volumes 1-4 comprise the Old Testament;5 and 6, the New Testament, with plates bound in where called for (rather than as separate Volume 7 as sometimes seen. (The Apocrypha was issued as a subsequent separate publication in 1816.) First Printing of the sumptuous Macklin illustrated edition of Scripture - the largest English Bible ever printed - one of the largest and most beautiful Bibles ever produced in any language, "embellished with engravings from pictures and designs by the most eminent English artists." (e.g. Fuseli, Reynolds). A splendid work, printed in very large type by Bensley, and ornamented with fine engravings┬┐ (Allibone). The Seventy full-page plates and the other engravings are truly brilliant and sumptuous. Lately rebacked full old calf, decorated in gilt. Lovely. Very light scattered foxing to just a few of the plate margins. Overall, fine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
