Elegie sur le trespas de feu Ioachi[m] Du Bellay ang[evin]
Paris: Frédéric Morel, 1560. First edition. Boards. Fine/The great French Renaissance poet Joachim du Bellay died on January 1, 1560. By January 3, Guillaume Aubert, who had probably met the poet at Poitiers in school, presented this elegy to du Bellay's Parisian printer Frédéric Morel. Morel's affirmation is shown in the pleasing typography, ornaments, and disposition of text on the page, as well as the inclusion of Aubert's dedicatory letter to Morel, praising the printer for being such a faithful friend to the poet, and comforting him in his loss. The elegy, in rhymed couplets, praises Du Bellay's learning and his poetic gift, as well as his liberality and his "magnanimous heart." The text of the dedication is in roman type, while the poem is in italic. Aubert went on to edit the 1569 edition of du Bellay's complete poems, published by Morel's son, who had taken over the press. . Quarto (24cm), [6] leaves, one blank, all ruled in ink. Printer's mulberry tree device on title page; vine scroll headpieces and initials. Roman and italic type. Bound in recent boards. Blank leaf A6 guarded to A1 and bound in erroneously before A2.
