DELUXE EDITION LIMITED TO 265 NUMBERED COPIES (250 for sale), IN A SPECIALLY DESIGNED BINDING BY ZAENSDORF OF LONDON FOR ARCADIA PRESS, THIS BEING NUMBER 151, SIGNED ON THE TITLE PAGE BY ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS. 4to, approximately 330 x 250 mm, 13 x 9¾ inches, tipped in colour plate as frontispiece and 84 high quality coloured illustrations of byzantine icons, including 17 tipped in, and many full page of which 26 printed on gold background, plus a double page black and white map of the island, interesting Preface by Makarios, introduction with historical background and commentary throughout by Papageorgiou, pages: (2), 132 including index, bibliography and list of illustrations, the second title page printed red and some red initials in the text. Bound in full crushed red morocco, large gilt and black pictorial design on upper cover, gilt lettering to spine on small black panel with gilt decoration at top and bottom, all edges gilt, red marbled endpapers. A Fine crisp clean copy, a touch faded on the spine, lacking original publisher's box. First published in Geneva by Nagel and in London the same year by Barrie and Jenkins, this deluxe edition of small limitation is signed boldly in red ink on the title page by Archbishop Makarios. The evolution of icon painting on the island of Cyprus is described from pre Byzantine times to the 16th century by Athanasius Papageorgiou who at the time of publication was Curator of Ancient Monuments in Cyprus. After the Turkish invasion and occupation of Northern Cyprus in 1974 many thousands of icons and other church art and artefacts were looted and stolen and sold around the world and Athanasius Papageorgio devoted the rest of his life to recovering and restoring the missing items, some of which feature in this book.
