Scrapbook]: Lilias Mackinnon's Album of Correspondence, Photographs, and Clippings of Appearances and Reviews
(Washington DC 1970 - A collection of correspondence from Scottish pianist and lecturer Lilias Mackinnon, including a 1956 letter Signed by Leopold Stokowski, a 1939 letter Signed by Albert Stoessel, a score Signed by Mackinnon, five original photographs, and various printed programs and reviews. Scrapbook. Quarto. Black suede binder with 12 double-sided sleeves. Moderately rubbed and chipped at the spine ends, very good. The bulk of the collection dates from the late 1930s through the 1950s, and most of the correspondence and printed ephemera relates to Mackinnon's influential book *Music by Heart* and her series of lectures on music memorization (known as the Mackinnon Method) given at music schools throughout the United States. An acclaimed pianist and teacher, Mackinnon was a member of the English school of pianists, including Myra Hess and Clifford Curzon, who were in turn inspired by Tobias Matthay. Mackinnon was one of the first soloists to introduce the music of Scriabin to England, and she performed frequently under the baton of Serge Koussevitzy in England and America. Ezra Pound attended her early recitals in England (he was the first to praise her performances in *The New Age* in 1918), and her recitals for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) won her an international reputation. The photographs include her publicity portrait, a group shot of her class at Oxford Summer School, and a group shot of England's leading musicians on a 1938 Baltic cruise that was organized by Hubert J. Foss, an important Musical Editor for Oxford University Press between the wars.
