Froben's device on title-page and last page; colophon at end of the index: 'Basileae, per Hier. Frobenium et Nic. Episcopium, MDLV'. Folio: pp [xxxii], 664 (last blank); [58] (notes); [156] (index, last recto blank, verso colophon). Signatures: A-C6, a-z6, Aa-Ii6+[4], aaa-eee5, a-n6. Recent half tan kangaroo and beige cloth, raised spine bands and leather spine label, new endpapers. With a matching cloth-covered slip-case. The title-page is a little soiled and with some slight creasing and a tiny tear at the lower corner; the three leaves following have a little of this wear also. Pencilled annotation (of publishing details) at foot of title. There is light damp stain at the head of the first 30 leaves or so, retreating gradually to the head margin. Similar but smaller marks appear in the head and foot margins in a couple of places further in the book, but overwhelmingly the pages are clean. The edges are darkened, with some old red sprinkling showing through. Otherwise in very good condition. ***The Historia Naturalis of Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD) is the largest surviving prose work of Latin antiquity. Composed as an encyclopaedia, citing sources and with a detailed index, it purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities then available, and was seen as a model for all subsequent works of this type. Froben's editions were annotated by the famous humanist scholar Simon Gelen (1497-1554); the designs for the decorative initials (and Froben's device) were by Holbien the Younger. *** Please use [Ask Bookseller a Question] option below to confirm availability and get accurate postage quote for this item (the amount quoted is for an 'average' hard-cover book of up to 1kg in weight).
