Dublin- Byrne, Dugdale, Jones at al 1793 - John Moore, M.D. A JOURNAL DURING A RESIDENCE IN FRANCE From the Beginning of August to the Middle of December 1792, To Which is Added An Account of the Most Remarkable Events That Happened at Paris at that Time to the Death of the Late King of France, IN TWO VOLUMES, small octavo, Dublin, Messrs. F. Byrne, B. Dugdale, W. Jones, J. Jones, D. Colbert and J. Rice, 1793, first Irish edition published in same year as London edition; full period calf with title label and vilume label on spine and gilt rules on spine, condition is very good for age with only slight edge wear, no fade, minor foxing, the odd tear, bindings very tight, 303 pp. and 370 pp. respectively PLUS a hand-colored fold-out map at the end of Vol. II with an Explanatory leaf ; there is a printer?s error in pagination starting at p. 361 wherein all subsequent pages are erroneously paginated from 561 et seq., but text is complete-(this is the section where the king is executed and query whether text changes were being made there which confused the printers); PROVENANCE: This copy has great Revolutionary War provenance in that it bears the ownership signature inside top board of J. J. Faesch of Morris County and Rockaway New Jersey- Faesch was the owner of major iron works and a supplier of cannon balls and ammunition to George Washington?s army, he came from Basel in 1764 and soon was managing the Ringwood Company operations in Bergen County (1769-70) and ultimately leased (and then purchased) a house in Rockaway from Col. Jacob Ford (the FORD-FAESCH HOUSE) where he controlled 6000 acres of mining land; this book was presumably part ofhis library at that house; THEN the next owner by gift presumably was GENERAL JOHN DOUGHTY (N.J. Militia) but also commanding officer of artiullery units during the Revolution fighting with Washington at Brandywine, Germantown, Morristown and Yorktown ( major New Jersey figure and friend to GEORGE WASHINGTON); this book descends from the Ogden family (see above) with bookplate of CLEMENT MOORE OGDEN inside top board- this Ogden being the grandson of Clement Moore (author of ?TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS?; THE BOOK: not meaning to obscure Dr. Moore?s first hand acciunt of what he deemed the savagery of the French Revolution in its miscarriages of justice with an emotionalaccount of many trials and executions which he witnessed; with the oft-missing handcolored Map of GEN. DOUMOURIER?S CAMPAIGN ON THE MEUSE; a scarce account with unique provenance from a Revolutionary war officer and Revolutionary War supplier [Attributes: Hard Cover]
