London: Samson, Low, Marston and Co. 1897., 1897. FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo., illustrated. Publisher's pictorial red cloth, bevelled edges, all edges gilt, patterned endpapers. Some light general wear and handling, slight fading to spine panel, bookplate to pastedown.Spotting to tissue guard and some light spotting to title page. A clean, handsome copy of a scarce Jules Verne title. This English edition is the first illustrated edition, previously issued in America as 'Facing the Flag' but without plates. Technically speaking this is a separate entity from 'Facing the Flag' as it was translated for this edition by Mrs. Cashel Hoey, whereas the US edition was anonymously translated for the unillustrated edition. The tale of an archetypal mad inventor of a guided missile which he puts to piratical use against Atlantic shipping. Myers.
