Original set design for Act II, scene 1 of the opera I Masnadieri Unsigned and undated but ca 1847-1853
A melodrama in four parts to a libretto by Andrea Maffei after Friedrich von Schiller's play Die Räuber, I Masnadieri ("The Bandits") was first performed in London at Her Majesty's Theatre on July 22, 1847. Subsequent productions took place in Florence (1848), Venice (1851), and Milan (1853); the present set design may very well have been executed for one of these early Italian productions.. Watercolour and ink on light wove paper depicting the castle chapel and surrounds. 190 x 285 mm. With contemporary manuscript titling to upper left. Edges frayed and with small tears; tear and small area of abrasion to lower left corner with some loss; minor stains to upper left quadrant; remnants of early blue mounting paper to verso.
