Survivors of the Chancellor Diary of J. R. Kazallon, Passenger
Boston: James R. Osgood & Company, 1876. First American Illustrated Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. vii, 358 pages. The first Illustrated American edition. Original green cloth with beveled boards and green and black decorations. Rebacked, with original soiled spine panel laid down, and rear flyleaf replaced. Edgewear and minor chipping to front flyleaf and following blank (which also has a previous owner name stamped on it). The following leaf, an extra illustrated title page, is in nice shape. A sound copy of a scarce title. For a rather complex publishing history, seeTaves & Michaluk 104 (p 151) Shortly after publication of this work, Osgood "sold at auction in New York City plates and remainders of many Verne books ... which were both bought by Albert Mason. Mason apparently sold them to Porter and Coates, who published an edition in December 1876 with a dozen illustrations, and different cover decorations. Scarce in the marketplace. See also Myers 47 (p 55) who notes these were apparently bound from the English sheets with the American title page added.
