Bilance psychoanalysy k 31. prosinci 1936 [The balance of psychoanalysis up to December 31, 1936]
Prague: self-published, 1937. Small octavo (17.4 × 11.2 cm). Original staple-stitched blind wrappers in photographic gray card wrapper; 15, [1] pp. Very good or better. [WITH ŠTYRSKÝ'S STUNNING COLLAGES]. First and only separate edition of this work by Bohuslav Brouk (1912-1978), an impassioned defense of the psychoanalytic principle in the arts, which denigrates a shallow and cheapened "Freudianism" practiced by greedy psychologists. Published as a private gift to friends and not for sale. A Czech psychoanalyst, philosopher, art theoretician and writer, Brouk was one of the first promoters of Freud's work in Czechoslovakia and a co-founder of the Czech Surrealist Group in 1934. He was a close friend of Karel Teige, one of the most original minds of the Czech avant-garde, and somewhat of an enfant terrible. The wrappers, over fragile orange wraps, feature the first reproductions (and the only use in print) of two surrealist erotic collages from Štyrský cycle "Stěhovací kabinet" ("The portable cabinet," 1934). Štyrský also directed the overall design and typography. Exceedingly scarce in the trade, especially in such good condition. KVK, OCLC show the copies at the French National Library, Getty, NYPL, and Yale, as well as a rebound copy at Chicago.
