[Manuscript]: "My Dog Fair Ellen"
1948. Near Fine. Holograph manuscript. 23 pp. Octavo and quarto sheets. Near fine with some light wear and a few spots on the first sheet. The manuscript for an article written by child actress Margaret O'Brien (or just as likely written for her) in which she describes getting her pup Ellen from Lassie's litter and her life as an actress. She describes visiting the pets of other stars such as Gregory Peck, Esther Williams, Kathryn Grayson; playing with fellow child stars Elizabeth Taylor, Butch Jenkins, and Claude Jarman, Jr.; getting her first major role in Journey for Margaret (1942); sneaking into Judy Garland's trailer while making Meet Me in St. Louis; getting her first trailer complements of Jimmy Durante; being pulled in the snow by Gene Kelly and Van Johnson; making Jane Eyre with Joan Fontaine; learning to ride a horse for Canterbury Ghost and being read to by Charles Laughton while he was dressed as a ghost; and getting a gift from Lionel Barrymore on the set of Three Wise Fools. The manuscript comes from the archives of Anthony Edwards the publisher of several well-known magazines including Collier's, which published an article written by O'Brien titled "Princess Margaret of Hollywood" in its January 29, 1949 issue. While we could not confirm this manuscript is for that particular article, although it seems rather likely given it provenance. A charming account of one of the most popular child actors of the 1940s.
