Decorated title page, plus 7 b&w plates by Gilbert James, including frontispiece (collated). M.R. James, best known for his ghost stories, here presents a tale for children. A middle-aged man finds a chest containing five jars, each with the ability to impart a magical power, including communicating with fairies and understanding animal speech. Mottled light browning to free endpapers, light toning to pages, small light soiling mark in margin of page 67, slight separation between gatherings at three pkace - gatherings still firm in binding, light browning to edges of text block, light edge wear - a little more at corners and at top/bottom of hinges with light fraying, small slight bump at bottom corner of boards, light cloth wrinkling at fore-edge of rear board, small area of soiling on spine, slight fading to spine colour, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine.
