Warrington: printed by William Eyres, 1777 - Quarto (270 x 208 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, neatly rebacked to style, red morocco label to spine, compartments and boards ruled in gilt. Extremities a little worn, boards scuffed, contents lightly foxed and some faint offsetting from plates, two small repaired punctures to sig. Bb3-4 not affecting text, a very good copy. 3 folding engraved plates. First edition of Howard's pioneering work on prisons and penal reform, "the first major practical work on the subject (Beccaria's book was primarily theoretical)" (PMM).
