THE BRITISH COLOUR COUNCIL DICTIONARY OF COLOUR STANDARDS Adopted by the British Standards Institution as British Standard No. 543-1934 WITH "A List of Colour Names Referring to the Colours shown in the Accompanying Volume". Two volumes.
British Colour Council, London 1934 - TWO VOLUMES. First Edition (dated 1934) of the 220 color samples. Two-hundred of the samples, as issued, are on 10 accordion fold panels loose in the original green silver lettered folio--Indeed the text comments that the cloth is Caledon Jade Green. Mild toning, soil to verso of the panels. The rear of the folio has 20 additional samples for a total of 220 samples, as issued. All samples are present. Six have small stains. But all color standards are visible and bright. The folder has mild soil. The text volume is Very Good+ Third Impression (1938) bound in matching green, silver lettering front cover which is stained. Mild edge soil. The bindings of both volumes are intact. The first major work of the British Colour Council (BCC). It defined color shades and gave a number code and almost lyrical name to many of the colors. BBC color codes define colors as varying by hue, tone and intensity and were originally designed for the textile industry. Many of the descriptive names were evocative of flora and fauna. Titles such as Larkspur (No. 196) Forget-Me-Not (84), Bee Eater Blue and Squirrel are among the most original. The BBC colors became the accepted "gold standard", used throughout Great Britain in such commonplace uses as the Royal Mail to such technical applications as planning commission maps. The military, horticultural societies, Royal Institute of Architects and a host of other organizations found the standards of great value. A Scarce complete set with both color standards and text.Faber Birren Collection No. 101. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
