"The second and most famous of the [five] Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout Natty Bumpo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and romantic." Grolier American 100, 34) "Set in 1757, during the French and Indian wars, The Last of the Mohicans established Natty Bumppo (called “Hawkeye” in this novel) as one of the immortal figures of American literature and indeed of the American imagination. Like the magnificent landscape of forests and waterfalls in which he moves, Natty is here restored to the full vigor of an earlier period of life. With his role as frontier scout and his hunting outfit which combines white and native elements, he appears to inhabit a liminal space between the culture of his origin and the world of his friends, the native warriors Chingachgook and his son Uncas, the last Mohican of the title."
