The Martian
Harper & Brothers, New York 1897 - Date: 1897 Lithograph 12 7/8 x 20 ½ ins. Artist: Anonymous This poster for Harper & Brothers is for a book entitled ¿The Martian¿ by the French born author George Du Maurier, published in the U.S. by Harper & Brothers in 1897. This poster has been illustrated in at least one book on classic posters from this period. The artist was Edward Penfield. Du Maurier was known for his cartoons in Punch in England and this somewhat autobiographical book was published posthumously in England (1896). The image is of a man looking out his window up in the sky towards a shining planet ¿ assumed to be Mars. The original poster is obviously rare as a search on the Internet only resulted in an illustration of the reproduction. The poster is mounted on Japan paper and has minute tears that are not visible. It was obviously framed at one time as there are remnants of tape in the upper top margin of the Japan paper. They do not touch the image. Overall the poster is almost new. This poster is conservation backed on acid-free paper and ready for framing. Poster Plus offers conservation backing also called linen backing at reasonable rates as a service to collectors, libraries and museums. Linen backing is a specialty of Poster Plus providing archival protection and allowing framing without destroying the collectible nature and value of the poster. Please contact us for details.
