Virginae Item et Floridae Americae Provinciarum, nova Descriptio
Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1630. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 13.5" x 19". Beautiful map of the southeastern coast from Virginia to St. Augustine in Florida. Includes geographical features such as the Appalachian Mountains ("Apalatcy Montes") and Chesapeake Bay ("Chesepioock Sinus"). Scattered animated vignettes include European and Indian ships, sea monsters and a wild turkey. Birds eye view of Indian villages in Florida and Virginia flank the title cartouche. Two earlier maps serve as the basis for Mercator's original plate: John White's "Virginia" and Jacques le Moyne's "Florida", as interpreted by Thomas de Bry in 1590 and 1591. Latin text on back. Some staining in margins and verso. Two pin holes in lower margin. Minor discoloration along centerfold. Full original margins. From the Latin edition of "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas). Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.
