The Sundering Flood
Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1897. Hard Cover. Very Good. Hard Cover. 1 of 300 paper copies. Ten other copies were printed on vellum. In his last years Morris wrote four prose romances, of which The Sundering Flood was the last. He was writing it in 1896 as his health was steadily failing. He became so ill that he had to dictate the final words of the work to Sydney Cockerell on September 8, 1896. He died on October 3rd. His daughter, May Morris, oversaw the editing and printing; the book was finished on November 15, 1897 and issued in February 1898 [Peterson A51]. The pages are printed in Chaucer type on Flower paper. The text is printed in black, with red chapter titles and shoulder notes. The beautiful borders and initials were designed by Morris. Bound in quarter holland blue paper with modern white linen spine and modern paper title label. There is light rubbing to the boards and slight browning to the edges as is common. There is also a light scuff mark to the front cover and a small dampstain along the top edge of the rear cover. The corners are worn and lightly bumped. There is very light foxing to the rear endpages and there are a few small spots of foxing to a few interior pages but overall, the interior remains very clean. The original front pastedown with the map illustration of Morris's world is present. This early fantasy novel was a direct influence on J.R.R. Tolkien. 507 pages plus colophon. MOR/062512.
