In 8vo (206 mm x 133 mm). 1 [blank] + title + v-xii + 1 ff. + 478 + 1 ff. + 4 plates & 1 map; lacks half title. Contemporary half calf over boards, re-backed, spine with raised bands and lettering pieces, rubbed and scuffed. Overall a very good copy, presents the usual foxing and offsetting to plates. First edition. A colorful narrative of Mathison?s journey from Portugal to South America; he set sail to Rio de Janeiro in 1821, where he stayed for a while before making his way to the Pacific coast, namely Chile, Peru and the Sandwich Islands. Handsomely illustrated with four plates (representing costumes), all colored and a folding map. Although the area visited is extensive, Mathison dedicates a large part of his relation to Brazil, describing in full the attempt of the Swiss colonization called Nova Friburgo "at the time in full decay" (Borba de Moraes), Canta Gallo, the Pure?s Indian Mission at Sao Fidelis and Santa Cruz.
