The Sandwich Islands: a Prize Poem
Oxford,: J.Vincent, 1841.. Disbound octavo gathering, 16pp., a few spots yet a fine copy. A quaint romantic idyll devoted to the Hawaiian islands presented for an Oxford poetry prize in 1841. The poem offers a potted history of Polynesian life upon the archipelago, speculating on their mythical origins and lamenting native customs such as human sacrifice and infanticide and applauding the arrival of Missionary Christianity. The author clearly has more than a superficial understanding of Hawaii, as revealed in scholarly footnotes peppered throughout this slim pamphlet (although Forbes dryly notes in the Hawaiian National Bibliography that 'The author does not seem to have enjoyed subsequent success as a poet').Forbes, 'Hawaiian National Bibliography', 1300.
