The Man Who Mastered Time (Signed copy)
Chicago: A C McClurg, 1929. First edition in book form, first printing. Hardback rebound in half-leather with five raised bands, gilt titling and contrasting title label to spine. New endpapers (with the originals), boards in red cloth. 19.5 × 12.5cm, 351pp. Signed by Ray Cummings with a charming lengthy inscription to the original ffep. It isn't particularly easy to read but it goes a little something like this, "Dear Mr Livesey (?), I contemplate with regret that I cannot endow you with a time-traveling vehicle. With it, what audiences you would conquer! How your voice would ring over those great amphitheatres of Ancient Greece! What vast Athenian prospectors [?] would, in [?] future ages, fling the replica of your living characterizations over all the Earth and to the audiences of half a dozen planets at once! I am sorry I can only envisage it. Regretfully, Ray Cummings, Hamilton, Bermuda, July 1st, 1930". A time travel novel from one of the founding fathers of the science fiction pulp genre. "It took what seemed but half a days traveling to traverse the 28,000 years that separated Loto Rogers from the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He had expected to find mighty cities and a flowering civilization in that future world, but instead he found only ice and snow - and Azeela." The Man Who Mastered Time was the third in a Matter, Space, and Time trilogy by Cummings which included his best known work The Girl in the Golden Atom. Condition: The binding is in very good condition (though the titling to the spine is a little skewiff). The boards are in good, solid shape and the rebinding has been done well. The original text pages are all a little tanned with some foxing throughout, mostly to the prelims and page edges. The book is complete, and very readable, with the inner binding tight. The pages are slightly and intermittently creased to the edges. It also appears there are some pen-mark indentations (no ink) to the title page, perhaps where someone has tried to go over a little of the printed title. However, this remains a very good copy of a scarce signed science fiction pulp classic.. Signed by The Author. First Edition. Half Leather (rebound). Good Plus.
