Nahum Sokolow
1886. Rare autograph letter signed "N. Sokolow", in Hebrew, one page, 5" x 8", Warsaw, Poland, 1886. "In my hopes that you, my esteemed friend, as an author and a Hebrew patriot whose soul is tied with the soul of his people, will rejoice over every new vision in our literature, I hereby let you know that the TSFIRA is changing forms and will transform from a weekly paper to a daily paper with a grand pattern and plan and at the beginning of the next quarter the TSFIRA will enter its new period. You undoubtedly already knew about this from the special announcements but I am still not free from telling you that I indeed succeeded [?] and the gates of the TSFIRA will be open to you to come and go as you please. With a single step I am sidestepping the little quarrels between us or between the TSFIRA and them. I am leaving behind those quarrelsome individuals to whisper and grumble as they please and hope that such cobwebs will not come between men as us. [?] wrote to me an article which I heard you had a part in writing and actually you did not take part in writing it. The labor! Because I did not know which article and which writers and since I didn't know [?] Since I received your letter in which you told me you had a grudge in you heart against H. Atlas, and since I had nothing to answer you in that regard I inadvertently ceased from writing to you. I also considered inviting you to HAASIF [another newspaper] while it is not my custom to do so with all my esteemed writers most of which returned without you calling them. I also judged that you will know your place in HAASIF and will not run from me on account of H. Atlas opposing you opinion. So I judged before and so I judge now. I will also hope that HATSFIRA by its spirit and new quality will be a respectful place for you articles, stories and poems together. You know already that the TSFIRA will broaden its borders with all kinds of literature, since its plan which it is now able to realize with the anticipation of the government [?] Doesn't make sense to me. The method and spirit of the TSFIRA will also be compatible with your frame of mind if you call yourself national and I do not call myself by that name, it is not [?] And really we have one goal, to do what right for our people to raise its head with respect and [?] life in its heart". Minor creases and tears in the right margin, still fine. Auction records indicate only one other letter by Sokolow being offered during the past 25 years.
